Intentional Movement for Healing

Western medicine and ancient healing systems like Ayurveda recommend exercise to maintain and improve health and longevity. Physical exercise enables you to move energy (qi) and prana (life-force) throughout the body to promote immunity and healing.

Exercise is especially important for cancer patients. The American Cancer Society recommends 2 1/2 hours of exercise per week, spread out over several days. Work at your own pace and you can increase it over time.

The Exercise Effect

Exercise increases the efficiency of circulation in limbs as well as the internal organs. Enhanced circulation sends fresh oxygen and nutrients to your organs and drains their waste products more efficiently.  If you are experiencing fatigue, you may not feel like working out or getting down on the floor to stretch. But when you do, you'll notice the positive effects. You'll likely feel more energized and motivated.

Types of Exercise

Choose an activity that you enjoy:  brisk walking, dancing, cycling, yoga, Pilates, swimming, weight training, gardening, pickle ball, qi gong, tai chi. They all benefit the body.

Be consistent. Choose a type of movement to do daily or at least 5 days a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. Make it a habit if you can by exercising at the same time every day. You may also consider doing activities with others, joining a group movement class or a gym, or working with a personal trainer.

Self-care massage, stretching and physical therapy exercises all help improve range of motion and strength. Learn more about these techniques:
